COMMUNIQUE: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA STUDENTS (NANS) GHANA HOLDS HER CONVENTION.



The Convention which saw the gathering  of students and Leaders of the Nigeria Student community  studying in various institutions in Ghana, Where various issues bothering on the students well-being and welfare was extensively handled as well as the elections of the Ghana community ofthe Nigeria  student body.

The Student body held their  Convention   which  was peaceful at the Prestigious  All African University College Koforidua Ghana, on the 27th of June 2019 and  a communique  was raised which Reads:

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE CONVENTION OF National Association of Nigerian Students -Ghana Chapter (NANS-GH) HELD AT ALL NATIONS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE -KOFORIDUA, GHANA ON THE 27TH OF JUNE 2019.
PREAMBLE
The National Association of Nigerian Students - Ghana Chapter, popularly referred to as "NANS-GH" or "NANS-Ghana" is the umbrella body of all Nigerian students in tertiary institutions across Ghana, duly recognised by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, her diplomatic missions and the respective  host government agencies, parastatals and departments.
Statistically, Nigerian students are the most populous in the international student community in Ghana making "NANS-Ghana" the largest international student organisation in Ghana with presence in over 45- Universities, Colleges and Institutes across the country. It is largely so, that two of every three international student in Ghanaian institutions are Nigerian students.
NANS-Ghana is saddled with the responsibilities of Coordinating and overseeing the activities of Nigerian Students in institutions of Higher Learning in the country.
With the expiration of tenure of the immediate past Executive council of the union as provided for by the NANS-Ghana constitution to hold annual convention in May/June of every year, the congress of NANS Ghana which is the highest decision making body of the union converged on Thursday 27th June 2019, at the prestigious All Nations University College - Koforidua, Ghana for her annual Convention to Elect new leaders to Pilot the affairs of this great association for the next academic year 2019/2020.
 THE CONVENTION PROPER
The congress commenced with an opening prayer as coordinated by the immediate past P.R.O Comrade Hon Christian alongside the Director of Programs; Comrade Micheal Edokpa. Thereafter the Convention Chairman’s election was conducted with (3) three nominations and Comrade Ahmed Sulaiman of was elected and adopted. As per the provisions in the NANS Ghana constitution, the Convention chairman later appointed Comrade Caleb Onyedikachi Jerry-Oloto as Congress clerk. 
The Convention Chairman addressed the congress and highlighted all procedures as provided for in our constitution and called for a violence free convention.
He acknowledged the presence of NANS monitoring team from Nigeria and invited the leader of NANS delegation to Ghana in the person of NANS Senate President Comrade Gambo Abubakar Mohammed who addressed the NANS Ghana congress on behalf of the President of NANS; Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan (GCNS).
 Furthermore, the Immediate Past President Collins Albert gave his state of the union address, Minutes of last year's congress was read, deliberated upon and adopted and the congress continued in a peaceful, orderly manner. Several issues concerning the union were discussed, resolutions were made and agendas were set for the incoming administration. One of major resolutions made was the unanimous resolution by congress to reaffirm the 2017 NANS Ghana constitution (as amended) for use by NANS Ghana chapter as our guiding book and also mandating the incoming administration to carry out the needed review and make available the copies to all member unions of NANS Ghana as soon as possible as the member unions also make financial contributions to the association in form of annual dues.
 The past Exco was duly dissolved and elections into NANS Ghana Executive Council was conducted by the Electoral Commission.
The following persons contested and were returned elected in to various offices for the 2019/2020 academic year:
 1) Executive President: Adebayo Samuel Ogunkoya

 2) Vice President:  NWOFOR Ifeanyi Samuel 
    (AKIM STATE COLLEGE)
 3. General Secretary:  Josiah Oghenegare
    (ALL NATIONS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.)
 4. Public Relations Officer: TEEDUM Nke-ee
    (BLUECREST COLLEGE)
5. Treasurer: Michelle Joseph
   (ZENITH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE)
 6. Women Commissioner: Joy Ovigwe Onovwakpor
   (CENTRAL UNIVERSITY)
The remaining open offices: Director of Programs, Financial Secretary, Welfare Officer will be filled via by-election at the first General Assembly meeting of this administration which will hold within 90-days of inauguration.
STATE OF THE UNION
The immediate Past President of NANS-Ghana; Comrade Collins Albert in his state of the union address welcomed all delegates  from member unions, stakeholders, observers and the monitoring team from Nigeria led by NANS Senate President Comrade Gambo Abubakar Mohammed, Former NANS Vice President Comrade Olamide Emmanuel Odumosu and their team. He expressed his appreciation to all and sundry for the support he enjoyed while in office against all odds of opposition from certain quarters. Ultimately, He gave glory to God for seeing them through the administration successfully.
Comrade Collins gave detailed breakdown of his engagements in office while discharging his duty as the Executive President of NANS-Ghana alongside his ExCo members while the delegates applauded him for his courage, longsuffering and tenacity even in the face of intimidations and antagonism from many quarters.
 He decried the high level of harrasments by the Ghana Immigration service and called on all students  to please regularise their stay in Ghana by obtaining their required Students residence permit and also abstain from all forms of social vices while they undergo their study in Ghana.
 He also urged managements of universities to try as much as possible to ensure the needed documentations are issued to Nigerian students upon registration for every semester to enable these students obtain their residence permit with ease and generally make the university environment conducive for our compatriots.
The former President also called on the Nigerian High Commission to Ghana to engender better relationship with NANS-Ghana in a father-To-Son manner and help the union in mobilising support especially from distinguished Nigerians resident in Ghana by way of recommendations and referrals and as well as the corporate organizations of Nigerian origin operating in Ghana. He further implored the Nigerian mission to jettison the idea of listening to individual elements who might at various points misinform the mission on the affairs of our union due to the personal relationship with accomplices within the high commission. He advised for a collective engagements borne out of proper briefing and consultations with the stakeholders of the union who are based or currently resident in Ghana and member unions of NANSGhana at all times and not 'selected individuals' with parochial interests in the affairs of the union or who have issues to grind with current or past officials of the union.
CONCLUSION
The association commends the efforts of the outgone Executives, member unions and stakeholders. NANS-GH is also full of gratitude for the leadership of NANS President Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan for his commitment to Nigerian students struggle at home in Nigeria and in the diaspora. It's truly Nans NewDawn.
NANS-GH expresses gratitude specially for all participating member union from over 34 universities and colleges that participated in this year's convention which has been adjudged as the best congress of NANS-GH so far in the past decade considering the atmosphere of the convention proceedings, and reactions after concluding the process. Every contestants embraced, congratulated each other and pledged to work together in harmony for the progress of NANS-Ghana while urging the new President Comrade Adebayo Ogunkoya to bring everyone together in unity of purpose and cooperate across board to ensure the realization of the aims and objectives of this union.
President Adebayo in his acceptance speech thanked every member union delegation that made it to this year's convention. He further reiterated his utmost commitment to uphold the unity of NANS-GH and readiness to bring the union closer to campus and forge a proactive relationship with the member union universities' management, Student representative Councils, Nigerian High Commission and respective government agencies, parastatals in Ghana. He called on all Nigerian students in Ghana to be law abiding and be a good ambassador of Nigeria in their respective domain here in Ghana. He commended the Ghana Police service for the security coverage and Ghana's Electoral Commission for their logistic support during the convention. He prayed for safe journey of all delegates back to their respective campuses.
